Keeping Alexandrines – and their struggle in the wild

The Alexandrine Parakeet (Psittacula eupatria), named after Alexander the Great who was the first to introduce these birds into the Mediterranean regions of Europe and North Africa, is the largest of all the parakeets, with the Nepalese Alexandrine being the largest of all the five sub-species, at 60-62cm (24-25in) in length.  They are similar in colouration to their close-relative the Ring-necked Parakeet, except they have maroon-coloured patches on their upper wings, are larger and heavier bodied, and have a considerably bigger, over-sized beak.
