For many years there seemed to be a secret known only by the people who lived with companion parrots.  For the most part, anyone with a scientific background continued to ignore the observations of parrot caregivers.  Then we started hearing about Dr Irene Pepperberg and her work with an “ordinary African Grey Parrot” named Alex, purchased at a pet shop.
