Dear Parrots magazine,
Saving the Spix’s
In the last issue of this magazine (July 318), I found it so refreshing to see that there are some wonderful people who really care about our wildlife and our threatened species. I remember some years ago, there were attempts to release Spix’s Macaws into the wild, but sadly with no real success.
For years the Spix’s Macaw has been extinct in the wild and only survived in a few captive environments around the world. But with the efforts of amazing conservationists, numbers have increased to such an extent that there are now Spix’s surviving in their natural habitat.
The work of Cromwell Purchase and his wife is to be applauded and it’s probably very hard for many of us to really understand the massive efforts this couple have put in to save this wonderful and rare Macaw. Thank goodness we have such people in our world carrying out this valuable work.
