Dear Parrots magazine,

Lychees are his favourite

I have always been a fan of natural fresh food and will always buy organic whenever I can find it, particularly with green stuffs like cabbage, runner beans peas in the pod when in season, and oranges, banana chips and pomegranate, but lychees are favourite for one of my Greys that has a passion for them. Unfortunately they don’t seem to be in season for that long, but suppose I’m lucky as having a couple of international food shops closed by, which sell a lot of different types of fruit and vegetables. They always seem to have good stocks of lychees when others don’t have any.

When I buy them, I buy a lot because of the rarity in greengrocers and they always look at me as though I am mad, as I walk out with a whole bag of them sometimes taking most of their stock. I think they consider me mad when I say they are for my parrot, which always raises some giggles.

When I get home and my Grey sees them, he goes crazy, so I do give him one and he just grabs it and bites into it, and really enjoys it. One thing to remember if you do by fresh lychees they can attract mould quite quickly, but there is an answer. If you wrap them in newspaper and put them in the fridge, they stay good for ages.

When I can’t get the fresh ones, I buy them in tins and he does also like those, but the fresh ones are much preferred, and unfortunately my husband likes the tinned ones too, but rarely gets a look in!
