Dear Parrots magazine,
Nest boxes
I respond to Bernie White’s letter in the last issue (Parrots Magazine July 2011) about nest boxes, and agree wholeheartedly with what he has said.
I bought some nest boxes with metal cladding, some years ago and could not get on with them at all. The birds tried to chew around the metal trim around the entrance openings and were clearly not happy. Since then, I have still used the boxes but have removed all traces of metal and, like Bernie, partly cover the entrance holes with untreated timber. The difference was remarkable, as the birds chewed away busily and seemed much happier. The boxes look a bit of a mess, but work brilliantly, and the birds love them!Arthur Bennett - by email
