Natural Perches

Dear Parrots magazine,

Natural Perches

When talking to a like-minded parrot owner recently, the subject of perches cropped up. This was somebody I had heard about although never actually met before who had an African Grey and a Blue-fronted Amazon in two separate cages in the new extension they had just had built on their house.

Body mass of parakeets

Dear Parrots magazine,

Body mass of parakeets

For a current research project that explores how birds respond to changing climates, I am looking for data on Ring-necked Parakeet (Psittacula krameri) body weights. We want to test the idea that energetic demands on these parakeets influence their distribution limits across native India and Pakistan, and to better understand how they are able to survive cold European winters.

Getting together

Dear Parrots magazine,

Getting together

One of my neighbours found out I had some parrots, she also has a parrot, an Orange-winged Amazon. Recently she contacted me saying she wanted to get a friend for her Amazon and how should she go about doing so? I have read many articles in Parrots magazine about adding a bird and the potential problems, so explained to her that if she wanted to get another bird she should go through that gradual process of putting them close to each other in separate cages, preferably in a neutral room.

Understanding

Dear Parrots magazine,

Understanding

Eb’s column has always fascinated me with his natural outlook when dealing with parrots. I have learnt a great deal from him and in the last issue of Parrots I was further intrigued by his article on ‘How smart is your parrot?’.

Much to learn

Dear Parrots magazine,

Much to learn

I read Sally Blanchard's Poicephalus Consultations. She made me aware that a parrot's anger comes from fear. I have had a rescue Senegal for 15 months, apparently he maybe 10 years old. So we've rubbed together all this time as best we can because he does not like hands. And I've worked my way round it by 'training' him, with patience, to step up on to a perch to move him from A to B.

Harness Success

Dear Parrots magazine,

Harness Success

I read a lot about harnesses and I so wanted to take my Orange-wing outside to enjoy the fresh air and sun, so I bought a harness. That is when the fun started!
