Natural is best

Dear Parrots magazine,

Natural is best

I have an African Grey and have always used natural perches in his cage, although he spends most of his time sitting on top of it. When I first put the perches in they were from a neighbour’s apple tree, which were fitted in position complete with bark.  That was about five years ago and what he did first of all was to strip all the bark off, which gave him hours of pleasure and although he has chewed some chunks out of this perch, it has been his favourite all this time.  Well for some time, he has been having a real go and actually chewed through it when I heard this crashing from his cage as he fell off it when it broke.

A Rounded Diet

Dear Parrots magazine,

A Rounded Diet

The conflict between pellets and seed diets seems to be rumbling on and on, and we read quite a bit about both sides of the debate. But above all else, particularly over the last few years, a lot has been made about fresh food, fruit and vegetables.

What a surprise!

Dear Parrots magazine,

What a surprise!

I have been keeping Amazons and Macaws for over 15 years and have just come across Parrots magazine. I live in a small town and it was on one occasion recently, I was in the newsagents, picking up my tv guide, that the person in the queue in front of me asked for her Parrots magazine.

Housekeeping

Dear Parrots magazine,

Housekeeping

It was only recently when a friend of a friend took me round to see another person’s aviaries, knowing that I was interested in parrots, but was somewhat surprised at the debris and mess that was in those flights.

Natural Nutrition

Dear Parrots magazine,

Natural Nutrition

Having another great day out at Think Parrots 2016, I was further enriched myself when listening to Rosemary Low in her talk, and especially about some of the natural foods that are around us all the time that we can feed to our parrots. I remember also reading Eb Cravens’ column and Jim Hayward’s article about the natural foods around us and how this free supply of nutrition can benefit our birds.

Hybrid Parrots

Dear Parrots magazine,

Hybrid Parrots

There has been a lot of controversy about hybrid parrots. I have a Blue and Gold and a Green Wing that have been together for eight years and are devoted to each other. This all came about by accident as a friend of mine could not look after her Blue and Gold because of health issues, and I was the obvious person to look after her bird on a temporary basis. But they bonded immediately and I did not have the heart to stop them from mating after about two years together, as clearly they wanted to bring up a baby.
