A breath of fresh air

Dear Parrots magazine,

A breath of fresh air

What a great letter by 10 year old Lily in the May issue, and her drawing of the Hyacinth Macaw.  How wonderful it is to see our youngsters taking an interest in parrots and, by deduction, an interest in our natural world.

More AG please

Dear Parrots magazine,

More AG please

I would like to point out that articles on the African Grey parrot Psittacus erithacus are few and spaced far apart.  The African Grey (Congo) has excelled and is recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records with over 1000 words, an African Grey has demonstrated an ability to possess a 100 word vocabulary and known when to use it.  Its ability to learn has been compared to that of a four year old child.  I believe these feats and accomplishments place it above the rest.

Lorikeets' diet and committed breeders

Dear Parrots magazine,

Lorikeets' diet and committed breeders

Eb Cravens' articles are renowned for their common sense.  In his article in the March issue he makes no mention of lorikeets and I wonder whether the advice offered in the caption of the photo of three lorikeets was that of the caption writer, rather than that from Ed's own experiences.  It stated that lorikeets "are always happiest with plenty of tropical fresh fruits and home made 'smoothie' nectars rather than total commercial 'powder diets'."

Neiva Guedes not mentioned

Dear Parrots magazine,

Neiva Guedes not mentioned

I was very disappointed to discover in the article in the March 2015 issue on the Hyacinth Macaw in the Pantanal by Laura Hirst that the long-term sterling work by Neiva Guedes does not get a mention.  I first met Neiva 20 years ago when I visited the Pantanal.  She had already been active for some five years by that time, and since then she has led the efforts to conserve the Hyacinthine Macaw with dramatic effect.  She visited all the ranches in the area and persuaded the local people not just to stop hunting the Macaws, but to help her protect them.  Their combined efforts have, in particular, stopped trappers from outside the area from carrying out their nefarious activities there.  She introduced a nest-box programme at an early stage where nest-boxes were not only provided, but monitored on a regular basis to check on the young and also take measures to stop the nest-boxes being used and visited by predator species.  I went on a nest-box inspection tour in January 1996 and witnessed first-hand how dedicated Neiva and her team are.  I wrote several articles on her work, which were published in your magazine.

Young enthusiasm

Dear Parrots magazine,

Young enthusiasm

Hi, my name is Lily and I'm 10 years old.  I'm a big fan of parrots!  I regularly read Parrots magazine and I hope that I can have my own parrot one day.  I have many books on parrots and I'm trying to become an expert so I can have a cockatoo.

How old?!

Dear Parrots magazine,

How old?!

I work for a large humane society, and we recently had a Patagonian conure brought in in very rough shape.  He has been with us almost three months now and is doing wonderfully and improving everyday!  I've actually been fostering him, and am happy to say that he will be staying and joining our flock permanently!
