Letters: Thank you Karen!

Dear Parrots magazine,

Thank you Karen!

Karen Chudley’s article “A day in the life of Team Conure” in the January 2014 issue was an absolute joy!  Her humorous writing perfectly captured the personality of Pyrrhura conures which is seen at its best when they have the space to fly and play, and even better, when they are kept as a small flock, which is how they live in the wild.  These highly sociable birds need the company of their own kind and with flight skills, most keepers never see, when allowed to fly in a room, their antics are a never ending source of delight.

Letters: Changing hoses

Dear Parrots magazine,

Changing hoses

For those keepers and breeders of parrots that house their birds in outside aviaries, beware of the dangers of the garden hose, if you use it to wash down the aviary floors.  I learnt the hard way.

Where there’s a will, there’s a way

Dear Parrots magazine,

Where there’s a will, there’s a way

Nearly four years ago a 44 year-old relation of mine had a riding accident which left her brain damaged.  She spent many weeks in hospital - five of them fighting for her life.

Letters: Sharing my Blue-front’s ordeal

Dear Parrots magazine,

Sharing my Blue-front’s ordeal

After coming home one day, I put my bags down and went to go and say “Hello” to Drifter, my Blue-fronted Amazon. But, when I approached his cage he began flapping his wings and screaming frantically, and I knew something was wrong. When I took a closer look he had caught his leg ring in the clasp of one of his parrot toys.

Letters: Air filter saved my life

Dear Parrots magazine,

Air filter saved my life

As part of the discussion going on, on Parrots magazine’s online forum, I would like to put in my two penneth! In 2003, I was given five years to live, on condition I got rid of my African Grey. I had been diagnosed with fibrosing alveolitis and sleep apnoea, but at 70 years old I am still here thanks in part to Alan Jones and Rob Harvey who gave me tremendous support – and I still have my beloved Bobby too!

Letters: Cosmo’s amazing ability

Dear Parrots magazine,

Cosmo’s amazing ability

Thank you so much for keeping us informed on the progress of Spix’s Macaws, I have just enjoyed reading the last instalment in issue July 2013 (186). I love hearing about the successful breeding attempts with these rare birds and look forward to their eventual release back into the wild in Brazil.
